12 Ways of Looking at an Apple

1. When you see an apple the
skin is red.

2. I see white little pieces
of an apple that's skin is peeled.

3. There is a bite in the round
circle of the apple.

4. Some chunks are missing
with a hole like a worm went through.

5. The apple is cut in half
white in the inside red in the outside.

6. All what I can see is an apple
core left.

7. The whole apple is there but with
brown smudges on it.

8. The white pieces turn to
brown rotting down.

9. The apples in pieces with red
in the outside white inside into
five pieces.

10. The seeds are stuck shaped
like a face.

11. The apple is bitten up and
only a quarter of an apple is
left.

12. I don't see anything exept
the stem of the apple.

In science class we study electricity
My favorite color is purple
I just feel like I could bang on a cymbal
I see my dad wearing a black hat
with a scarf
I feel like a walrus

Dad likes a walrus
I'm bored of all this electricity
I want to be wrapped in a scarf
I eat a plum that is very purple
but where's his black hat?
Could I bang on the cymbal?

I want a cymbal
I don't like a walrus
I kind of like a black hat
I could be an eel of electricity
but not with scales that are purple
I want to be a person wrapped in scarf

I want a scarf
I'm glad my dad has a cymbal
and I'm glad the cymbal's not purple
I see a walrus
Does is have any electricity?
I take my dad's black hat

I wear his black hat
with a scarf
I don't think they have electricity
what happens if I bang on a cymbal?
without a walrus
that isn't purple

I love purple
I don't like a black hat
I kind of like a walrus
something that keeps me warm is a scarf
Dad has more than one cymbal
I like science especially electricity

I like electricity but it's not purple
I want to bang on a cymbal with a black hat
I wear a scarf but not with a walrus

THUNDER

I hear a really big boom
The sound is such a scare
Did I see something zoom?
That thing that zoomed is rare

I saw a big strike
It's somewhere near the city
It will be scary if you hike
I can't believe it, it's such a pity

The strike I think is lightning
Lightning scares me to death
It's like you are always fighting
My mom says, be happy like a wreath

It is a really big thunder storm
When is the storm going to form?

KNIGHTS

There is a knight
knights are so brave
they will have to fight
what they do is save

They will save someone's life
do you know what they do to enemies?
they cut their throats with a knife
they will tie their enemies with weeds

So they will sneeze
they usually are ordered by a king
the king's so mean the knights will freeze
the king will make the knights bring a royal ring

the knights kill
it will be a big thrill

A BOOK

A book is fun to read
a fire of dragons will
be a fine adventure a
mountain of vultures will
be dangerous eagles of gold
will be something you want
to get before your
enemies get that special thing
honey of silver will be useful
it might heal people there are a lot
of adventures in a book

THE FOREST (pantoum)

The forest is cool
it's very hot

it is dangerous a little

it's very hot
the trees are weird

monkeys climb trees
cats are cool

it's very hot

DON'T BE BAD JUST READ

I want to fly like a bird
I get information to read
I will never get disqualified
Theres nothing wrong with the principal
Until his face is green
He's so cold his cheeks are pink

Not too pink
If you do fly like a bird
The principal won't turn green
I just read
watch out here comes the principal
you might get disqualified

I don't think I will get disqualified
If I do I will turn pink
there's something wrong with the principal
I will never fly like a bird
it is just to be read
I guess the principal turned green

if he is sick he should be green
I don't have to be disqualified
So I will read
I read about roses that are pink
My favorite subject is a bird
now there's nothing wrong with the principal

I don't like the principal
he's not green
he does not care about a bird
soon I will be disqualified
I am so cold I will turn pink
I learn to see how to get warm is read

that's why I read
stay far from the principal
He's almost red mad but is medium pink
I pretend to be sick green
or I will get disqualified
nothing better than a bird

don't fly like a bird it's just to be read
if you don't want to get disqualified stay away from the principal
pretend to be green because the principal is medium pink.

DON'T BREAK A RULE

I need to follow a rule
the principal will get red
the boys will turn blue
as the sea
the girls will turn silver
as a shining skin of a tiger

not exacty a tiger
if you break a rule
the principal wil not turn silver
he will be very hot, mad, red
not as the sea
that is very blue

ice is cold blue
I need a tiger
not the sea
I'm telling you don't break a rule
you'll see the principals face red
not like a coin that's silver

I like silver
the sky is blue
when will it turn red?
or the black stripes of tiger
don't break number 1 rule
rules are not about the sea

that is very right, not sea
I don't think any silver
just a plain rule
like maybe you don't paint your teacher blue
don't ride on a tiger
but that's when growups' faces are red

they're like lava they're so red
they're sick near the sea
they see a face of a tiger
how the skin is like silver
the right color is cold blue
they aren't made, you didn't break a rule

I follow a rule just so the principal won't turn red
they boys will turn blue as the blue sea
the girls will turn silver not like a tiger

THE WEIRD DAY

On my way to school
I saw a dolphin with
yellow eyes, blue tongue
with a red star along its
back. It seemed to hypnotize
me but then a garter snake
saved me. The garter snake had
blue eyes with a blue stripe
on its back. I touched the snake
but before me appeared a young man.
At school there was a glittering
pencil it gave all the answers to our
test and I got an A+. At recess
a big oak tree talked to me told
me about the history he was
150 years old. On my way back
from school I saw a black cat
with gold eyes it reminded me of
the pencil. It transformed into
a pencil. I picked it up so I
could share what kind of day I had.

7 WAYS OF LOOKING AT THE MOON

1.

When it's dark a big
yellow circle is in the
sky

2.

In the night
a half a yellow circle
is there

3.

Still so dark
a quarter of the
moon is left

4.

In the night you
see a dim light
behind the clouds, that
is the moon

5.

In the night I
look in a telescope
seeing a circle covered with rocks

6.

When there's a snow storm
when you sleep I can
see a circle unusual and with
white but really is the moon

7.

The way to get dizzy
is you're moving in the
car but the moon follows
you trying to get the moon
to lose the car's tracks

EAGLE I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOU

Eagle eagle how do you have such
powerful eyes. Is it because your
body was made by? Oh eagle
why do you need those wings? Is
it because you need to fly so you
can see the world not the ground.
How do those claws work? Do the
claws hold your food you catch
to eat. Eagle I want to know
all about you. You are a creature
someone could be curious about.

SORRY

I am sorry to say I
got muddy foot prints in
the house.

I was playing with my dog so I
wanted to see if he could track
me down with foot prints. I wanted
him to hunt that's it.

I can't help it. So nice it
was because the dog found me. I like
him. Please blame the world or the
dog not me.

8 WAYS OF LOOKING AT A CHEETAH

1.

When the cheetah runs I can see the
power of its legs and black specks along
his back.

2.

When the grass is moving I can see
the yellow back with spots with
his legs in a position to jump and
eat its prey.

3.

When the cheetah is asleep
I can get a look at him
with his tummy faced down
with his legs calm.

4.

The cheetah eats his prey
with his white teeth are eating
his prey's flesh.

5.

I can see the cheetah
jump very far in a very
different position than before.

6.

Twigs crack with leaves covering
the cheetah that I can only see a little yellow
and black of its skin.

7.

In a cave when a baby
is born that will be the first
time you see a cheetah do something
nice.

8.

One night you see a cheetah
twirling and twisting so its enemy
couldn't catch him.

THE LETTERS

A is red E is black I is white
D is green U is blue those are the
colors of the letters

A and E are like the black dark night
when the sun is setting like a witch flying
on her broom with her cheeks hot like red
lava coming out of a volcano as black
rocks and ash come out

I is like at midnight you see white
ghosts around with your cheeks so pale
It comes out of the white paper in your book
that takes you to an adventure with
words

D is like the beach when there is seaweed
getting washed away. In the sea
you can see the reflections of the grassy
mountains that I might climb in
the future

U is like the river flowing in a
peaceful day the sky so blue as
the flowers by the river and the
ocean far away

A, E, I, D and U are like the world
of all colors compared together as the
red sun setting in the black night with
white ghosts and the green seaweed at the ocean
that is blue as the flowers by the
river

THE WORLD'S BOOKS OF STRENGTH AND MUSIC WITH SCIENCE

I have strength
I want to be creepy like a lizard
I don't need action
I need books
I like singing a song
I like the world

different things in the world
I need some strength
I need a song
I can camouflage if I am a lizard
I need a lot of music books
and a lot of action

I have a lot of action
I read books about the world
all kinds of books
I am little I am small but I have strength
I don't want to show-off just be a lizard
I want a peaceful day and sing a song

how will I make up a song?
I don't care about action
I don't care about a lizard
well, I care about a peaceful world
I help the world using my muscles and my strength
and reading science books and other kinds of books

I love science books
I am so cheerful I want to sing a song
at the top of my lungs and have some strength
I need energy to fight bad guys I need action
I want to be a wizard and help the world
lizards are cool that's why I want to be a lizard

a little tiny lizard
I learn about lizards from reading books
well, I don't need the world
I need a great little song
I am strong and I do have action
I am strong already I don't need strength

I can't have strength if I want to be a lizard
I don't need action I need science books
I do need a song for the country and the world.

GET TO SCHOOL (A SESTINA)

I see a cheetah
he has a lot of vitality
he hates going to school
so energetic he plays soccer
I see a panther
he writes poetry

I like poetry
you read poetry as fast as a running cheetah
you are as black as the night, panther
I have some vitality
I am ready to play soccer
I have to do math homework for school

I will be tardy for school
I need to write some poetry
I need to play soccer
I will run as fast as a cheetah
I will run with vitality
as fast as a panther

I need to run faster than a panther
I need to go to school
I don't have energy I walk furious with vitality
my dad writes poetry
I walked much slower than a cheetah
I kicked my legs like I was playing soccer

I do feel like I'm playing soccer
I wish I was black like a panther
I wish I had spots like a cheetah
I just need to get to school
I don't need poetry
I need a lot of vitality

I want to run I still walk with vitality
I am not thinking about soccer
or reading poetry
I need a ride by a panther
so I can get to school
is there any cheetah?

I saw a cheetah running with vitality
I went to school but can I play soccer?
I saw a panther but I want to write poetry

A RHYMING POEM ABOUT PENGUINS

Penguins are cool
they rule
there are all different kinds
they are smart, they won't be bad, losing their minds.
They camouflage in a cool way
I can't explain
The water is bright
the penguin has some white
There's a dark side, very dark
the penguin has black
The enemy are killer whales
The weakest penguin the one who fails
sees if that one gets eaten up by a killer whale
Penguins are zest
They are the best.

I AM A LIBRARY BOOK

I am a book I don't
like it when there's plastic
on me. There are water and
snot from those pesky people.
From all these hands it starts
to stink. When there is a
desk they shine a little
green stripe on me and
it awfully hurts. Uh oh
do you think that girl
is going to pick me with
those sticky fingers?

I THINK I WAS QUIET

When I whispered to my friend
the teacher was looking at me
I think she didn't hear me
I jumped around the classroom
when the teacher was gone I think
she didn't I threw a ball
in the house I think my parents
didn't hear me I snored last
night I think I was kind
of quiet I think I had a
very very quiet day.

Sunday, September 21, 2003

WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?

Why is the sky blue?
Is it because green is grass purple
is grapes red is apple and pink for flower?
I don't think so because ocean is
blue maybe the earth is mostly water
so the ocean so maybe the sky is the
reflection of the ocean. No way anyway
the sky doesn't look like water
maybe aliens are trying to make something
and it is very blue no way
all what I want to know is why the
sky is blue

I LIKE RED

I like red as the shiny skin of an appple
something red like the roses you smell
red may be lava coming out of the volcano
red as the suit Santa Claus wears and white too
red could be the color of your nail polish on your finger nails
the color red could be the color of lipstick
red is the color all over the place

I AM A TRASH CAN

I am a trash can I hate
being a trash can they throw away
diapers candy wrappers broken pieces
of glass. The most worst thing
is the yucky smell it's so disgusting
it's hard to breathe with the bag
but I don't smell as much but
really stinks Oh now a woman
with a diaper everyone hold their
nose Oh I don't have a nose.

I WANT TO INVENT SOMETHING

I could invent I know maybe
eagle of wood very complicated to carve
How about a car of music that
would be impossible to make for
me it would it could be a picture
of wall I'm horrible at drawing
I know what I should be I should
be someone else like an athlete
I have lots of energy left

Red River reminds me of
a burning red and hot water
Rio Grande reminds me
of Spanish
Amazon river reminds me
of the Amazon rain forest
Slave river reminds me
of slaves a long time

BASS AND SAXOPHONE

The bass makes low noises like
booming like a car driving drumming
some one knocking saxophone shiny
and nice like a duck quacking
a high tune like a harmonica
I love those instruments two instruments

I AM SO SORRY

I am sorry to say I
melted the chocolates

I love science I was trying
to see how fast it could
melt I recorded it

It was so cool I can't
help it I have to say
it melted so fast. You
can't get it now deep in the
trash yes! I like that!
Sorry

BEMSHA SWING

My father taught me a jazz song called Bemsha Swing. He is very amazed I learned it so fast. It was pretty simple anyway. You just play it.

the only thing you can do
some day you could talk
English and tell me.

I AM A BLACKBOARD

I am a blackboard there
are some ways I don't like
being a blackboard
do you know this white thing
makes marks on me it really
hurts those people are crazy
I get cleaned by this black thing
they put fingers on my face sometimes
those boys punch me with their fist
they get in trouble anyway I
hate this woman she presses very
hard with the white thing I will
have a horrible day for sure

A NICE GIFT MIGHT BE

A nice gift might be a silver of
duck she could put it somewhere
maybe water of glass nope

how about water of blue it
might remind her about the sea
too boring something very interesting
could be a cat of dog no way
it does not exist well I was
just kidding I know just what
it could be any creature of chocolate
she'll get too fat maybe vegetable of
statue I might be able to do
that

ACTING REMINDS ME OF

A class I take is acting it
reminds me of other people
when we draw like an artist it reminds
me of real life when I see
the lines I have to memorize
it reminds me of homework filled
with words when I act it
reminds me about imagination in what
I have to do to act this
class is a great help yes it is

I HOPE I DIDN'T MAKE A SOUND

I hope my parents didn't hear
a creak of my feet when I
sneaked in their room I hope
the teacher didn't hear me whisper
to my friends I hope the
teacher doesn't hear my pencil
writing a note I hope at math
the teacher didn't hear me press
the buttons on the calculator
I hope I didn't make any sound
today

OOPS I DIDN'T MEAN TO

I am sorry to say I kicked
a soccer ball in your head

do you know a kid has to
play I thought I was going
to practice kicking straight
I thought your head was going
to be a good target

I am so strong really I am
a pretty good hitter I got it
right in the middle of the head
Oh sorry I'm too happy

I LIKE TOILET ROLLS BUT YOU DON'T

Maybe this toilet paper roll
is useless but I don't agree
your parents throw it aways
it seems so convenient to
me I save them it looks so
ugly I just don't care I think
junk is my treasure I just have
to say that I might make
something interesting in the future
I love toilet paper rolls
don't ask why I've just told
you right now

I LOVE ANIMALS

The deer running so fast
when a hunter is there
cheetahs chasing their dinner
horses running with the wind
sheep eat grass bulls
running wild eagles flying
with their keen eyes
jaguar hiding behind the bushes
ready to eat dinner
dogs sniffing for their treat
cats snuggling with their owner
coyotes howling in the woods
I love animals all
around you

POLAR BEAR POLAR BEAR I HAVE QUESTIONS FOR YOU

Polar bear polar bear
why is your skin so white
as snow is it because you live
in the snow and camouflage from
your enemies polar bear
how did you get so strong is
it because you have to break
the ice and hunt for seals
polar bear am I right polar
bear I hope some day you could
tell me your dark secrets about
you

I AM VERY VERY DIFFERENT

I used to be in second
grade but now in third
grade that is more challenging
than before I used to be seven
but now I am eight more
responsible and intelligent.
I used to be cranky but not
that many tears in my eyes
I used to be little but now
big and strong because I am
older.

I AM AN APPLE

I am red and shiny some
of those pesky people think I am

on my skin. Did you know

She's very crazy. She poked teeth
in my body very hard I can't
stand it there she is well a nice
apple be quiet hold your breath
every one.

THE SUMMER VACATIONS

When people go to summer vacation in Europe there are languages. A month or two ago I went to Spain. They can have different cultures. Maybe there would be a king and queen in Spain and not in the United States. You walk and see. I like the museums. A great time it is.

The leaves fell down off the trees

but the sweat still fell down my cheeks

The rich chocolate
taste is in my mouth

The powerful lion of all
ran with all his might

The cheetah runs in
one jump to get his food

The penguin swims
in water so cold but
he does not shiver

The big bow the string
I pull back with my
two fingers and
guess where it was

The penguin swims down hundreds
of feet but no time at all one
fiip of a wing up on the snow

The slithering the slidings so thick
and long and see a mouse
gulps it down

I wrote more short poems.

Book Review

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

A boy who goes to Hogwarts. His fifth year. He has adventures, occlumency lessons with Snape, dark arts teacher is weird. It's like she is his enemy. Ron a quidditch keeper. Someone haunting his dreams, different stuff happens to Harry Potter. The best thing about the book is Voldemort is looking for the prophecy but never gets it.

The roar of the lions
go across the jungle

The old sea where
the seals swim

The book opens begins
a new story

The eagle flew
with one flap of
its restless wings

The alligator gave
a snap at the fish

The eagle flies sees
every bit of the village
down there

Way across the world the seas
are landing safely on the beach

Cheetahs run with tired legs
far away in their land

I felt like writing these poems; I just felt writing something short for a nice day.

Rose immense or plump mouth
night beside my cheek
imagine summer feel rhythm
drink myself dizzy & leave
dance weed see wait in peach
celebrate brilliant lizard of wet stone
cozy motor like carnival tingle

This is a poem of me and my dad's best lines with magnetic poetry. Dad did the first ones and I did two of the second ones in a row. It's a pattern of how we wrote the lines.

Cool blossom murmur angel sound
shall sing across America
sent puddle clock giggle
her full love bring every river
voice tiny roaring through lunch

We played this game with magnetic poetry with my dad. I did a poem like the game but by msyelf.

THE STUFF IN THE MUSEUMS ARE LIKE

A painting is like an artist
Van Gogh´s paintings are like a blur
The statues are like the old days
Armor is like a soldier
The museums are like
Madrid itself.

I wanted to write about what I saw in museums.

My dad told me to describe Lola and Amalia and I had to use some Spanish words too.

I AM A TRAIN

I am a train
I don´t like being
a train. People scratch
me like crazy
such a heavy weight
too hard to me to
carry wrecking me soft
seats. People stop at
my floor. I feel like
I´m stage fright and
it´s never a good day.
Stop scratching me
kid I´m trying to
get a rest

I always loved trains so I decided to write one more poem about a train.

CASTLE IN SEGOVIA

Chair
royal
bench

jewels
perfect

We sent to Segovia and we went in this castle so I wrote about it.

Train

Train train
where did you get
those seats. They
are so soft train
will you be my best
friend and tell me how
you move fast train
how did you get
an air conditioner
Are you fast asleep?

We were on a train going to Segovia. So I wrote different poems about trains.

Sandals in Different Kinds of Poems

brown
sandal
good

and it reminds me
of shoes
brown, feet and
my stinky old socks

sandals of browns
sandals of flowers
sandals of stripes
sandals of everything!

sandals are like feet
sandals are like glasses
case and those are like glasses

brown
soft
neat
pretty
wear
pattern
sandals

and sandals are cake
sandals are brown paint
and sandals have to
be sandals and I am
sandals brown I don´t
like when people
wear me, I don´t like
the smell and bye bye
for now.

This is one big poem and I put different kinds of poems in one big poem. I had just thought of that.

LADY BUG

I am a lady bug and I
hope I look pretty and
I hope no kids will
trap me to keep being
locked up in something
because I have no idea
what the thing they lock
me up in is called and I am
so sorry it's dinner time
good evening I have to go.

I wanted to write about an insect. One of my favorite insects is the lady bug.

SUITCASE

Stuffed with clothes
shirts, pants even stinky socks
I hate being a suitcase
I don't like the noise of
the air plane and kids touch
me with dirty hands and
kiss me their hands are
so cold but on my uh-oh
here comes a kid I know I'll
have a bad day.

We are going to travel to Spain. We would need to bring a suitcase so I wrote about a suitcase.

Nasturtium is something I eat in salads
Insidious animals are harmful
Convenient stuff is here to use
Ornithology is what I do not study
Loiter is not what smart people do
Epidemic is bad news

Watch when I'm teaching my class
Incoherent stuff happens to me
Griddle is where we cooked green eggs
Hippopotamus is not my favorite animal
Tepee is a home I do not live in

I wanted to write an acrostic on my teacher, and her name is Nicole Wight.

Japan is the country my wife was born
Osculate is something I did to my wife in a wedding
Nomad is something my daughter wants to do
Aloha is a nice kind of language
Trichinosis is some disease I never got
Heroin is something I will never take
Asthma is something I might have had
Nearsighted is the wrong name for me

Mature is how my daughter acts
Able to write poetry well
Yom Kippur is a holiday I do not celebrate
Hysterical is a mood I never had
Exhilarating is a mood I always have
Warbler is an interesting bird to see

This an acrostic with my dad's name, who is Jonathan Mayhew.

Athletics is not what I do
Kimono is what you will wear in Japan
Irritate is something that my daughter does
Khaki is a color I might like
Obnoxious stuff happens to me like my throat

Tangram is something I don't do
Sphinx is something I never saw
Undertow is something dangerous
Courage is what I need
Haven is home where I live
Inflatable thing is a a balloon
Yodel is not the way you sing because you don't sing
Allowance is something I don't have

This is an acrostic with my mom's name. And her name is Akiko Tsuchiya.

ACROSTIC

Jaguar is my favorite animal
under water is where I want to go
lobster is a cool animal
infections are not good for me
antelope is thing I write about

Teeth are bones that I lose
snail is a slow animal
useful stuff is great for me
convenient stuff makes me happy
harmless animals do not hurt me
invertebrate creature can be a snail
yogurt is something I put in a smoothie
arsenic is something I stay away from

Mention good words not bad words
arduous thing to do is doing sixth-grade math
yarmulke is something I don't wear
hospitality is a great thing to do
eczema is something I would not get
wealthy would not be our name

When I was in the car I asked what acrostic was. Dad told me. I got really interested in it and wanted to write an acrostic, and if you look down at the beginning of the lines, you will see "Julia Tsuchiya Mayhew."

SHORT POEMS

The painter splashed
some paint on his
nose

The red juicy apple
grew from the tree

My mother plays the
piano with a loud bang

The bird flies over
little mountain tops

The stars are shining
in the country night

From here we can
see the mountain peaks

The people raze the
house in our neighborhood

The lady bug flies in
the blue sky

The owl make a hoo
in a night

The tiger lays in
the jungle

The cheetah runs
in the jungle to
get the antelope

We eat crackers
with a crunch

I wanted to write a whole bunch of short poems because I love poetry.

BIRD

I like birds. I wanted to write a poem about birds.

YOU KNOW WHAT I NEVER SAW

I never saw the blue
tiger who lived in the ocean
and of course that was
weird and
I never saw the sea turn
yellow and the turn turns
yellow when the blue
tiger is in the sea
I never saw any star except
the sun and I am going
to study space.

My dad is going to teach poetry in my class tomorrow. I got really excited and decided to write lots of poems in my blog.

THAT NICE CAR

That is a nice car
look at its big black
smashed up wheel, so
black. That car is so brown
covered with mud. How
beautiful it looks. I just
love how brown it is.
The car is peeling. I'm glad
it is because it looks
nicer like that. Oh that
broken car.

My mom got a new car so I decided to write about the opposite of that, about an old broken down car that I like.

THE DAY I WENT TO SPAIN

I am in Spain
and I can see a castle
jewelry how shiny
they are. Oh that
crown that is nice,
I go to a
restaurant and taste good food.
I get some more
yummy. How good
food they have.
Now I'm going to
the capital of Spain
on the train. I walk
around. I looked
out the window. Oh lovely trees.
What a sight. I am
here but I need to
go to the bathroom.
There's someone I can
ask.

I wanted to write a lie poem about me traveling to a country. I asked what my dad's favorite country was. He said it was Spain and I wanted to write about my dad's favorite country that was not the United States.

OH, A WHALE

Oh, that whale
when it is moving
it looks like a fish
How cool it looks!
Oh, when that tail splashes
it looks like a big splash a dolphin made
in the water
And when the whale eats he looks like a
dog eating, oh, he looks
just like a dog looking whale.

I saw another poem on my blog with a whale in it. So I decided to write another whale poem.

I AM A CLOCK

I am a clock
sitting on a
desk and I go
to sleep early
so when I
wake up I ring
all the people are awake
I get dizzy when those
people set me,
oh, there is a person
I am going to get dizzy.

I was thinking of what to write a poem about when I saw a clock and I decided to pretend to be a clock.

I AM A TREE

I am a tree
and I am really old
I like it when kids climb me
and when the wind
blows my leaves
it's such a nice day out here
but I am hot
oh, look, there's a kid,
she might throw water on me.

I wanted to pretend to be a living thing. I knew I already wrote about other plants so this time I wanted to be a tree.

THE SQUID

There is a submarine
a squid is attacking
it, oh no, what
can they do? People
racing and the squid
is attacking the ship
it's soft oh
it has soft skin
well look too bad
submarine is gone.

I am reading "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and in the book I read a chapter about a squid attacking a big submarine. The submarine did not break or anything. I just wanted to wanted to make it break in the end.

WHALE

Whale whale
where did you get
so big? and aren't you
here whale? Well
where did you get
that little hole and
please tell me
why you splash water
at me? Oh whale
you are my
hero.

When I was cleaning my room I saw a whale book. So I wanted to write a poem that went with it.

THE TORNADO

Today there
was a tornado
and we went in the
basement we heard
a big crack our window
was broken there started
to be thunder and what
a big storm but now
it is a nice day and
our window is fixed
but I was outside in
the tornado and
it blew me into the
house and it is
time to go.

Mom keeps on saying I should write about a tornado, so I did.

THE RED ROSE

I am a red rose
and sometimes
girls smell me but
I make sure
they don't pick me.
I want to stay on the ground
and wait till the
rain comes down
but now I have to be quiet
because I do not want
this big girl
to hear me talking.

There's a book called "Rose, where did you get that red?" So that gave me an idea because the cover mentioned a red rose.

INSIDE YOU

Inside
you
there
is
a
beating
heart
and
something
red
called
blood
there
is
water
and
other
stuff
inside
your
body.

I just got this idea from the human body book I have.

THE TRAIN

I am on a train
with windows.
I walk around
meet new people
have good food
I am in Spain
going to Madrid
and I think
the train ride
is over.

I am going to Spain for three weeks. I am imagining I am on a train going to the capital of Spain.

LAMP

There
is
light
coming
from
a
black
lamp
on
my
white
desk
and
it
is
time
to
turn
the
light
off.

When I was thinking of something to write about I saw a lamp right next to me. I wanted to write about it.

GLASSES

My
dad
is
wearing
glasses
he
looks
really
cute
and
I
know
why
he
needs
them.

In the living room I saw my dad wearing glasses. I thought that would be a good thing to write about.

TIGER

He
has
black
stripes
yellow
skin
nice
whiskers
on
him
and
I
bet
he
looks
nice.

I am doing a tiger puzzle, and that gave me the idea.

SPRING

The
flowers
are
here
purple
red
blue
they're
so
nice
and
hot
I
tell
you
whooh

It is the season spring. So I want to write about the season.

BALL

I
got
a
ball
and
press
it

and
it
comes
up
turns
into
a
real

I got a present from my grandmother. You push the ball down and in a few seconds it will pop up and be a ball again.

BAG
I love this bag
It is nice
I had it
when I was
a baby.
It might not be
interesting to you
I make little stuff
out of it
but I had to
change it
so it can be normal.
I just like that bag.

I saw a grocery bag in the closet. I didn't think so many people would like it, but I like it myself.

A CAP

That muddy cap looks great when the lights are off I put a flashlight and see it looks like a shiny brown star with little orange and yellow on it. I have good eyes and I am the only one who could see the orange and yellow on it. I remember this cap belonged to a baseball player. I set the cap on the desk and fall asleep.

I like baseball. I decided to talk about a baseball cap.

THE TREE

I am a tree
growing on the
ground, my leaves
grow and when I
was never born
I was a seed
it flew in the
wind and it became
a plant. It grew
and grew up
It is such a nice day out here
but I'm thirsty can the rain come
down?

I look outside; there is a tree. In this poem I decided to make this poem when I was pretending to be a tree.

ORNETTE COLEMAN'S SAXOPHONE

Ornette plays good
but some people don't
like him and down goes
the saxophone, Ornette
gets sad and mad.
He is still playing
and it is great.

Mom told me to write about Ornette's saxophone so I did.

THE BAT

An old bat that
got burned in the fire
looks like a bone
shiny and brown
with little cracks like
a fault in the middle
of the earth I think
it looks nice like that.

I read a book about Roberto Clemente when his mom threw his bat in a fire. I think it would look nice.

CHEETAH
Inside
the
cheetah
is
stuffing
and
black
spots
yellow
skin
who
is
a
cheetah
stuffed
animal.

I decided to write about my stuffed cheetah.

ARGUMENT OF MY BOOK

I wrote about my
Dad, a cheetah,
and plants coming
out of chocolate,
lizards, unicorns,
sun, stuff against
war, a flying ship, school,
and what I could
do about exploring,
water and about a balloon
farm, stuff I never
told people about, about
a door, vegetables, book
worms, about six stuff
paper reminds me
of, rivers, a stork,
what quiet stuff
makes me think of,
about peace, dreams,
apology poems, rattle
snake, a trip to
France that is not true
and that is it.

My dad taught me to do the "argument of the book" poem.

WHAT I SAW TODAY

I saw plants come out of my chocolate and I went to a pond and a snake with roller skates on the ground and a whole bunch of choclate, some blue wine that my Dad had and I had never seen blue wine, I saw a yellow spotted lizard with white tongue, black teeth, red eyes and then it was night and now time to go to bed.

My Dad read "Rose, Where Did You Get That Read," and he found a section where there were poems where you imagine this stuff that you like is all together.

WATER

Inside
me
there
is
red
purple
blue
water
way
inside
my
body
there
is
no
more
water
I
think.

My Dad read "Rose, Where Did You Get That Red" and I did a "one word" poem myself.

DRUMS AND PIANO MAKE ME THINK OF

Drums make me think of footsteps all around me and rain coming down, windy, branches breaking off trees. Drums also make me think of fireworks and clapping hands, leaves blowing, horses galloping all together, rocks falling off mountains, and piano makes me think of birds chirping, people humming, people talking, water spilling and those little sounds when they hit the ground, whispering, all kinds of stuff.

Dad read "Rose, Where Did You Get That Red" and told me something about piano and drums. I decided to write that same kind of poem.

I WANT PEACE

War is not peace.
Peace is not war.
I want peace.
You bomb little forts
and kill people.
Not good.

This is another poem I wrote against the war. Then I went to the protest in Forest Park.

Sunday, April 20, 2003

Sun, sun, how did you get so bright?
How do you stay up in the sky instead of ground? You must be special.
Where did you come from, sun?
Please tell me I will see if you can answer my questions.

This is another "Tyger, Tyger, burning bright" poem.

I've never told
anyone that I have
been on the sun
without getting
burnt. I never told any
body I talk to
nature. I never told
anybody I have
magic powers. And
here comes my Mom and
time to go.

My mom read "Rose, where did you get that red" again, and you had to think of stuff that you've thought of and never told anyone, and it doesn't have to be true.

NOISES AND COLORS

Boom, here is a white and brown drum
tick, tock, here comes the brown clock
thump thump, here comes the red white and blue parade
flap flap, here comes a red white and blue flag
whoosh whoosh here comes the wind
boom boom, the red white and blue parade is over

When I first started writing poetry I decided to do noises and colors together. This is one of my first poems.

Friday, April 18, 2003

Unicorn unicorn,
where did you get that horn?
I wish I had one, unicorn,
where did you get those magic powers and your four legs?
Unicorn, I need you.
You must tell me what you need to live,
and come here quick.

This is the same kind of poem as the Rattle snake one.

Rattle snake rattle snake where did you get that rattle?
Rattle snake where did you come from?
Rattle snake please tell me how did you get your food
and your long body?
I wish you were here.

We did "Tyger, Tyger burning bright" poems, and you had to ask lots of questions of mysterious creatures.

SHORT POEMS

My dad beat the dusty drums.

The butterfly landed on the
bare branches of the tree.

The rose came out of the ground
in the dark woods.

The rocks came down the mountain
far away from the city.

The rocket exploded before it landed
in the sea.

I mopped the dusty floors in my new house
made out of logs in the woods.

Tic toc the clock is ready for midnight.

I read a book called "Rose, where did you get that red?" again. I found poems that were short. One poem was a "The frog jumps in the sound of the water." I decided to write a poem like that. So I wrote a few poems and called them "Short poems."

IT IS QUIET

When I tip toe into a room
I feel like someone is sneaking to get something.
When I move my hands
I feel like I am telling a story.
When I throw a ball in the air
I feel like I am throwing a ball to someone.
When I push the door open
I feel like I am just relaxing.

I read a book called "Rose, where did you get your red?" with my Dad. There were quiet poems, so I decided to do that kind of poem so I wrote one.

THIS IS JUST TO SAY

This is just to say I broke your umbrella
which you were saving for a rainy day.

I thought it was a toy because I saw
a baby play with it.

I saw an umbrella my mom had and
thought of stuff you could do with
an umbrella.

I seem to be a seagull flying in the air,
but I really am a scare crow just sitting there,
I seem to be a house sitting there,
but I am really a book sitting there,
I seem to be a scientist,
but I am a poet writing all day and I am.

I read another book Kenneth Koch wrote called wishes lies and dreams.
there was a section about I seem to be/but I really am poems.

I DO NOT LIKE WAR

I sit on a mat
and say with my own mouth
war cannot go on.
I pick up a loaf
and say war must not
go on.
So decide to protest,
I go into my house
with a
sign.
I see a flower
I put it on the sign
Now I'm going to my house
I have a sign about war in Iraq
I do not like war
and it must stop.

I wrote this poem for my Mom's friend Elena, because she doesn't like war either.

THIS IS JUST TO SAY

This is just to say I ripped the American flag
which you were saving for a speech our President was going to give.

I hope you aren't mad.
I just wondered what the flag was made of.

I got this idea when I heard that an American flag got ripped on Sept. 11.

THIS IS JUST TO SAY

This is just to say I stole the flowers
which you were saving for a wedding.

Please forgive me. I just couldn't help it.
They smelled so sweet and so good.

I like flowers and I wanted to do an apology poem about them. I like weddings too, so I decided to write a poem about flowers for a wedding.

THINGS I KNOW HOW TO DO

I know how to turn a cat into a dog,
I know how to turn an apple red,
I can wrestle with a baboon,
I can turn an elephant into a statue
by putting powder on the elephant,
I can grow a rose bush forty feet high,
I can put my head on a dog's tail,
I can make a building with my bare hands,
I can make fun of a weasel and he will be mad,
I can walk without touching the ground,
I can do anything with a noun.

I wrote this poem with my Dad. He wrote one line and I wrote the other. We made a "lie poem."

WHAT SIX THINGS PAPER REMINDS ME OF

1. Paper reminds me of writing my story and my poems.
2. Paper reminds me of the trees.
3. Paper reminds me of nature.
4. It also reminds me of wood.
5. Also my handwriting.
6. Learning by reading a paper.

I read the same book "Rose, where did you get that red" and saw this section about 13 ways of looking at a blackbird. I decided to do that kind of poem so I chose paper because I always like paper and thought that would be a good choice.

A DOOR

I want to be a door
I want to be a smooth door
I want to be brown, I want to be wood,
I want to open and close
I want to stay still and relax
I really imagine I am going to be a brown, smooth door
staying still in our front porch
and I will if I can
and here is a piece of me

When I was in the garage I found a piece of wood. I knew it came from the door, so I decided to write a poem about it. And I also taped a piece of wood to my notebook to show what I meant.

VEGTABLES

I hate vegetables,
I get tomatoes and I do not like them,
but my mom says those are new kinds of apples
take a bite and it tasted really good, I get some spinach
and I do not like spinach,
but my mom says those are green grapes,
but they're bigger and not so much like a circle,
take a bite it tastes good.
I get some corn and I do not like corn,
but my mother says that it is not corn that is a new kind of french fries,
take a bite it was good,
I got some carrots and I do not like carrots,
but my mother says take a bite,
those are oranges in funny shapes and it tastes good,
I kept on eating vegetables,
I discovered that I was eating vegtables and now love vegetables.

I read a book about this and decided to write a poem about it.

THE RIVERS REMIND ME OF

Snake river reminds me of a wiggly line crawling like a snake.
Nelson river reminds me of someone famous who did something to this river and they named the river after him.
Ottawa river reminds me of an Indian who was really important so they named the river after that person.
Yellow river reminds me of the sun glittering in the water and the river looks yellow.
Sorry, I have to go to Vistula river.

I read a book that is called "Rose, Where did you that Red," and there is a section where poems have a river in each line. I decided to do that kind of poem.
